Privacy Policy

Your privacy guarantees as a member of the BURU community
IWILAB, Inc. (“IWILAB” or “BURU”) is committed to protecting your privacy. We know you've placed your trust in us and expect us to both keep your personal information private and protect your rights to the information you've included in your personal collection (the “Collection”) through the services (the “Services”) accessible at www.buru.com (the “Site”) or through your account with BURU (“BURU Account”).

This means that your personal information belongs to you, and we will only use it with your permission. When including things of your own creation in your personal Collection, you retain all rights to them, if you decide to make that content private. However, BURU facilitates the sharing of all forms of media and allows (and encourages) the easy sharing of personal Collections of information. So when you choose to share things of your creation in your Collections (which are called “Burus”) by making those Burus public, you do so with a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license.
Your private account information and information we collect passively from you
What this covers:
  • This section deals with the information that is only visible to BURU systems. These are things that other BURU users will never see.
  • This includes details about the information you provide to us during the registration process, as well as your account and Buru settings.
  • This also addresses information that we collect "passively" as you use BURU. This is information that ends up in our server and system logs, in cookies we may set, and any other information that's collected through technical means while you are using the BURU service.
The Basics:
  • First and foremost, we want you to know that you own all personal information you provide to BURU. While this information is "deposited" with us, it is and will always remain your property.
  • We will never sell this information, nor will we share it in any form that can identify you individually with third parties who aren't our agents.
  • If you no longer want to be a member of the BURU community, you can delete your BURU Account at any time. During our beta period, you can have your account deleted by contacting us by clicking here. If you do, we will delete from our systems all private information you have provided to us. (You should be aware that this information may still exist in backup files, but these files are never used or accessed except in the event of a significant system failure.)
  • If you've deleted your account, some of the "passive" information we've collected may still exist in log files. However, there's no way to link this information to you individually once your account has been deleted.
  • BURU needs to comply with the law, ensure our service is used legally and for its intended purpose, and make certain that people's lives and well-being aren't threatened because of anything related to BURU. This means that there may be times when we are required to disclose your private information to comply with a valid legal order (for example, a warrant or subpoena), to investigate fraud or egregious misuse of the BURU service, or in situations involving physical harm to any person.
  • BURU uses "cookies" to collect non-personal data and information. Cookies are small text files a website uses to recognize repeat users, and is typically placed on your hard disk by a Web page server. Cookies contain information that can later be read by a web server in the domain that issued the cookie to you. The way cookies function is by assigning a number to the user that has no meaning outside of the assigning Web site. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of BURU sites and services that depend on cookies.
Use of Your Personal Information
BURU collects and uses your personal information to operate and improve the Site and better deliver the Services. These uses may include performing analysis aimed at improving the Service; making the Site or Services more user friendly by reducing the need for you to repeatedly enter the same information; and displaying advertising and content that are tailored to your preferences and interests. BURU may support the Site and the Service by advertising, and accordingly, we may use some of the information collected in order to customize the advertisements to your interests and preferences. However, the process of selecting customized ads tailored to you will use data that does not personally identify you, such as using demographic data such as ZIP code BURU also uses your personal information to communicate with you, such as providing you with mandatory notices or discretionary notices about the Service. From time to time, we may also send you surveys or promotional mailings to inform you of other products or services available from BURU and its affiliates. In the event that you are offered to participate in a survey, such survey will includes a privacy statement that details the way BURU will use the information submitted with that survey. Personal information collected on BURU sites and services may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which BURU or its affiliates, subsidiaries or agents maintain facilities, and by using a BURU site or service, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country.
Security of Your Personal Information
The personally identifiable information BURU collects is securely stored within our database, and we use standard, industry-wide practices such as firewalls, encryption, and (in certain areas) Secure Socket Layers (“SSL”) for protecting your information. However, as effective as encryption technology is, no security system is impenetrable. BURU cannot guarantee the security of our database, nor can we guarantee that information you supply won't be intercepted while being transmitted to BURU over the Internet. We recommend that you not disclose your password to anyone.
Your Burus and other public information
Your Burus have three parts:
  • Information created by you. These are things for which you own the copyright. For example, this might include an original note you’ve authored or a photograph you've taken.
  • Information you collect. These are things for which other people own the copyright. For example, this might include an image you find on the web, an article written by another person, or a copy of something in someone else's Burus.
  • Comments and ratings made on your Burus or those you make on other people's Burus.
The Basics:

Information you create
  • You retain the copyright to information you create that you set to be private.
  • If information you create is set to be public or shareable with a group, it is licensed with a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license. This means that other people can copy and make derivative works from the information for non-commercial use.
  • Once something has been set to public or group sharable, the license is always Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike, even if you subsequently change that item to be private. (However, changing the item back to private does restrict further access to the item to yourself.)
  • Information you create that is public or group sharable can be copied by other users and placed in their own personal Collections.
  • You can remove or edit information you create that's in your Burus. However, removing or editing your copy of the information will not alter copies of that information that exist in other people's personal Collections.
  • If you delete your BURU account, items in your Burus that are set to be private will be removed. Items set to be public or group sharable, and copies of Items you created in other people's personal Collections, will not be removed.
  • When you put something in your public Burus -- and thus make it visible to other BURU users on the BURU site -- we reserve the right to place advertisements or other promotions on the same webpage. BURU currently retains the revenue from these ads and promotions.
Information you collect
  • If you add something to the Burus in your personal Collection that belongs to someone else (for example, a web page, link, photo, feed, music, video, feed or a copy of an Item in someone else's Burus), they retain all intellectual property rights to the content, subject to its license. This means they have the final say on what happens to the property and can request the removal of it at any time.*
  • When you add some types of content to your Burus, like a photo or a webpage, our system may make a copy of it on BURU's servers. You can see an example of this when you collect a web page and a slide of it appears on the BURU site. Although a slide of the Item appears in your Burus, the copyright holder can request removal of it at any time.*

  • *To request the removal of something, or to report a copyright violation, clicking here.
Comments and ratings
  • When you rate or comment on another user, another user's Buru, or an Item in another user's Buru, your comments are licensed using the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license.
  • Comments and ratings cannot be changed or deleted. Inappropriate or abusive comments should be reported using this form.
Account information and passively collected information
  • When you register to use BURU, we collect some basic information from you, including your name, email address, and location. This information is only used for the BURU service to identify you and for aggregate analysis.
  • BURU's service can notify you when things are added to your Burus or your friend's Burus. If you don't want to receive these emails, you need to delete your account. To do so, contact us.
  • When you use the BURU system, we collect some information "passively." This refers to information that is automatically collected by our servers as you are using BURU.
  • This "passively" collected information includes your IP address and several cookies that help our servers identify your web browser and your account (so that other people can't pretend to be you). We use this information for diagnostic purposes and aggregate analysis.
  • In certain places on the BURU site, we may make use of third party advertising servers or web analysis tools. These agents may set other cookies or use "web beacons." However, in no case can the data collected by these agents identify you personally.
Other things you should know:
In the event that we add new features to the BURU site that involve issues concerning your rights that aren't covered here or in the documents linked to from here, we will note this where and when that feature appears. We will also clearly explain the issues and give you the ability to consent to any changes involving the privacy settings on your information.

There may come a time when we need to change this statement of your rights, for example, if BURU is no longer an independent company. In the event that we make any material change to these rights, we will notify you by putting a prominent notice on the BURU site and giving you the option to delete your account. BURU will also do this if we merge with or are acquired by another entity and your information becomes subject to a different set of policies. What constitutes a "material change" will be determined at BURU's sole discretion, in good faith and using common sense and reasonable judgment.
